In most cases, friendship contracts are not based on an equal partnership. This is especially true for contracts between indigenous and colonizers, both in America and the Pacific, throughout the colonial period. These treatises, often written mainly in the language of the colonizer, manipulated the terminology of friendship by the great powers to create an environment of trust, especially for the good of themselves. While treaties promise protection in exchange for these benefits, they are more subtle ways to access resources for the commercial exploitation of small nations. I recently shared my own struggles and joys with the friendship process. In addition, I have reflected on the issue of friendship with my community in IG surveys, conversations over coffee, meetings with clients, in my therapist`s office, etc. In the course of this process, I keep coming back to Don Miguel Ruiz`s text The Four Agreements. The language and perspectives he shares offer a strong lens for healing, especially in the context of relationships. Since the early 2000s, friendship in international relations has been the subject of further examination. While the terminology of friendship has always been used in debate and diplomacy, the analysis of friendship in international relations has been considered a simple synonym for good relations. In 2007, Felix Berenskoetter called for the inclusion of friendship analysis in international relations, and since then a modest literature has formed around the concept. This Agreement is applied in accordance with the laws of the State ___ Friendships must be based on mutual concern and loyalty. So if Friend #2 is an idiot, you`d better believe that Friend #1 will talk about it and throw it directly on Friend #2`s face.
The ancient Greeks distinguished three types of friendships between two communities: Philiai, Symmachia and Epimachia. Symmachia and Epimachia were both alliances, the former forcing states to support each other in the struggle, and the latter requiring parties to help each other when an invasion is suffered. Philiai then made the important distinction of designating friendship between communities, but did not give the contractors the status of allies. The Romans had a word similar to amicitia, which was a state of diplomatic relations that could coexist with an alliance or without existing. The Romans practiced establishing peace and friendship with communities on their peripheries, although in practice these relations were usually built on unequal treaties that forced their neighbors to support Rome militarily, but not necessarily the other way around. We confirm and declare that this Agreement was entered into voluntarily and without threats, promises, coercion and/or of any kind, under the laws of the Republic of the Philippines, the United States and the State. .
